Mangatangi History Group
In Memory of Mrs. Kathleen Banks. 1937 -2018
The Mangatangi History group was formed in 2012 to preserve the History and Heritage of the general area of North East Waikato, east of Pokeno.
We consider our responsibilities to include the communities of Mangatangi, Mangatawhiri, Maramarua and Miranda. We refer to these as the 4 M's
Our aim is to find, research, record and preserve for the future use of others, all aspects of history and heritage. Our interests also cover pre European history and heritage flora.
The group meets monthly. We usually have a guest speaker, or do a field trip to places of interest. All are welcome to these meetings.
We have representatives on the Waikato District Council Heritage Forum, Franklin Heritage Forum and work closely with schools in the area. The Waikato District Council is supportive of our activities and has provided financial assistance to some of our projects.
The group has compiled a significant portfolio of written histories of people and places within our area. While much of this is in paper form we have a continuing program to digitalise our records for wider access. All our material is available on request.
Recent projects have included the 150th commemoration of the Thames Expedition which saw the erection of three military redoubts between the Firth of Thames and Pokeno. This function was attended by more than 100 people, including representatives of our Navy and Army reserves.
We are particularly fortunate to have the support of Ngati Tamaoho and their Marae at Mangatangi.
We acknowledge the permission of Auckland Libraries to use some of the photo's within the website.
The Mangatangi History Group meets monthly Contact Nelson Weedon, 027 631 4123, for time, venue and topic.
